As a supplement to its Health Management and Informatics curriculum, the College of Health and Public Affairs has designed a study abroad program for undergraduate and graduate students interested in international community health and services at UCF.
This interdisciplinary study abroad program will provide students from different disciplines from the College of Health and Public Affairs to explore Community Health and Services issues in Costa Rica as a way to promote collaborative work of students/faculty between departments and schools.
This program will provide opportunities for students to identify and assess problems, and which local organizations and partners, devise possible solutions, service implementation, and outcome evaluation (intervention/outcome research). It will encourage global competency through the acknowledgement of cultural influences of Costa Rica on the student and the gain from diversity. This program will be hosted by the University of Costa Rica.
If this program receives more than 20 confirmed participants, a second program will be created between July 3 - 14, 2012.
Students should plan to arrive by noon on the starting day of the program in order to transfer to the housing. Students are advised not to purchase airline tickets until they are notified that the program has met its minimum numbers.
Payment breakdown based upon the minimum number of students:
Payment 1: $100 (non-refundable)
Payment 2: $500
Payment 3: $287.50

Differentiate between community and service delivery needs in the USA and Costa Rica based upon client/population assessment; community and social resources; treatment options and effectiveness, and national & local policy
Articulate specific cultural elements and characteristics of the populations and organizations visited and analyze their applicability to their discipline and working environment
Activities will be conducted in Spanish, some basic language skills are recommended for this program.

Disclaimer: The cost does not cover UCF tuition, airfare (for most programs), independent travel, and personal expenses. Cost is approximate and may fluctuate due to changes in foreign currency. UCF reserves the right to alter or cancel the program at any time. In such cases, the university shall not be liable for airfare or other transportation costs incurred by the student. Students should consult their travel agent about buying travel insurance to defray unanticipated costs in the event travel plans change. Students will be notified via Knights email if there are any significant changes made to the program.
